Mandela’s release is iconic, like MLK's “I Have A Dream” speech. For me, the challenge is to see such familiar footage through a new lens. I wanted to feel Mandela's release through the eyes and hearts of those who had spent years advocating for him and trying to get him out of prison. A crying kid, a British MP, activists, and an African head of state each were transformed by the moment, and it is this that I wanted to reveal. Finally, the reunion with Tambo is one of the most moving moments of the entire series.
