The Good War and Those Who Refused To Fight It

by Rick Tejada-Flores and Judith Ehrlich. PBS Special.

I can edit war—I don’t want to say it is easy, as it is quite harrowing—but how do you edit peace? The World War 2 Conscientious Objectors (COs) showed Nobel Prize-quality commitment and courage—at the same time, their countrymen were giving life, limb, and their sanity to the cause of defeating fascism. The juxtaposition of these two types of courageous men offended some viewers. But I found the COs fascinating and heroic in their willingness to be the only ones in the room standing up for their values.
