A mentor said to me, “When you edit vèrité, let it play. A camera bump is not a reason to cut.” I loved that–a reminder that I had to work within the film language I was given. Good vèrité looks easy, but it’s the hardest to direct, and the hardest to edit. When it works, it feels like we are in the same space as the players.
